India Yamaha Motor (IYM) has launched a new modern retro motorcycle, the XSR155. Available in a single variant, priced at Rs 1.50 lakh (ex-showroom), the Yamaha XSR155 is based on the same Deltabox chassis as the Yamaha R15 and the Yamaha MT-15.
The new XSR155 tries to integrate the vintage retro design with modern elements. Rather than being muscular, it is sleeker, with the teardrop-shaped fuel tank adhering to that quality. The tuck and roll seat adds a classic touch to the motorcycle. There are four colour options -- Metallic Grey, Vivid Red, Greyish Green Metallic and Metallic Blue.
The round LED headlight is characteristic of the classic retro design, complemented by a round LED taillight. The turn indicators are LED units as well. Among other features, there is a digital instrument cluster (LCD unit). A TFT unit might have been better, given that other Yamaha models have it. Nonetheless, the Y-connect app allows for a seamless Bluetooth connectivity with the instrument cluster, beaming call, SMS and email alerts, and phone battery level status. Furthermore, using the Y-connect app, you can check fuel consumption, maintenance schedule, last parking location and any sort of malfunction, among others.
The new XSR155 employs the same 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, FI engine as the R15 and the MT-15. It develops 18.4PS of maximum power and 14.2Nm of peak torque, and comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The motorcycle also gets an assist and slipper clutch.
The suspension duties are performed by USD forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The 17-inch alloy wheels are shod with tubeless tyres. The braking duties are performed by a 282mm front disc and a 220mm rear disc. A dual-channel ABS is standard. The motorcycle is equipped with a traction control system as well.
Yamaha is also offering a couple of customisation kits -- Cafe Racer and Scrambler -- for the XSR155. The TVS Ronin is the closest rival of the Yamaha XSR155, although the new model will also compete with the Royal Enfield Hunter 350, which has a relatively bigger engine.
Against the Yamaha XSR155's price of Rs 1.50 lakh (ex-showroom), the TVS Ronin is priced between Rs 1.25 lakh and Rs 1.59 lakh (ex-showroom) and the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 between Rs 1.38 lakh and Rs 1.67 lakh (ex-showroom).
