Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) launched the Sierra 2025 in India on November 25. The SUV is offered with three engine options, including a new 1.5-litre Hyperion T-GDi petrol unit. This motor is expected to be used in the upcoming Harrier petrol and Safari petrol.
The Sierra's 1.5-litre Hyperion T-GDi engine develops 160PS of maximum power and 255Nm of peak twisting force. While the Sierra 1.5-litre Hyperion is paired only with a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission, a manual option is expected for the Harrier and Safari.
Given that the Harrier and Safari are larger SUVs, the 1.5-litre Hyperion T-GDi unit is likely to be tuned differently for them.
The addition of a petrol version in the Harrier and Safari line-ups becomes relevant as rival models from Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India and JSW MG Motor India offer both petrol and diesel powertrains. However, the segment remains dominated by diesel, which accounts for over 80% of volumes.
Both SUVs currently use the same diesel engine -- a Kryotec 2.0-litre unit producing 170PS and 350Nm, available with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmissions.
The Safari diesel is priced between Rs 14.66 lakh and Rs 25.96 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Harrier diesel ranges from Rs 14 lakh to Rs 25.25 lakh (ex-showroom). The petrol versions of both models are expected to be priced lower than their diesel counterparts.
The Sierra 2025 is not the only Tata SUV to offer a Hyperion engine. The series debuted with the Curvv, which uses a smaller 1.2-litre Hyperion T-GDi petrol unit delivering 125PS and 225Nm.
In the Sierra 2025, apart from the Hyperion T-GDi motor, there is a new 1.5-litre Revotron naturally-aspirated petrol engine (106PS and 145Nm) with 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCA options, and a 1.5-litre Kryojet diesel engine (118PS and 260/280Nm) with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque-converter automatic choices. Drive modes include Sport and Normal, while terrain modes include Normal, Wet and Rough.
The Tata Sierra bookings open on December 16, with customer deliveries beginning January 15, 2026. The model is available in seven trims -- Smart+, Pure, Pure+, Adventure, Adventure+, Accomplished and Accomplished+. For now, the Tata Sierra price has been revealed only for the entry-level trim at Rs 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory).
