GST RATIONALISATION ON LUXURY CARS

The luxury ICE cars earlier attracted a total tax of 48% to 50%. This would include a GST of 28% and a compensation cess of 20% to 22%, depending on the engine capacity and body type of the model.

However, with GST rationalisation, all luxury ICE cars have been placed in a uniform 40% slab. Also, there is no compensation cess on vehicles now. However, the EVs are still in the 5% GST slab.

The new GST rates will become effective from September 22. Several carmakers, be it mass-market players or luxury players, have already announced that they would pass on the entire benefit of the lower taxes to their customers.

LUXURY CAR MARKET IN INDIA
