Maruti Suzuki launched the e Vitara electric SUV in February 2026.

Amid a rising demand for sport utility vehicles (SUVs), the country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India, is planning to introduce seven new models in this body style over the next five to six years.

The SUV segment now contributes nearly 55% to the domestic passenger vehicle (PV) volumes in India. Several industry experts believe that the share of SUVs could reach almost 60% in the near future.

As for Maruti Suzuki, the company's SUV market share, which was around 16.8% in FY20, jumped to 19.6% in FY26 (April-February), mainly driven by new launches.

"The share of SUVs within the Indian PV market has been growing rapidly. Maruti Suzuki is expanding its product offerings in the SUV segment to secure market share," the company's Managing Director and CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, said during an investor presentation on March 17.

Maruti Suzuki currently offers six SUVs across internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrains.

The company launched its maiden battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e Vitara mid-size electric SUV, in February 2026. Among the ICE models, the Brezza compact SUV, which is currently on sale, entered the market in June 2022, the Grand Vitara mid-size SUV in September 2022, the Fronx compact SUV in April 2023, the Jimny off-road SUV in June 2023 and the Victoris mid-size SUV in September 2025.

Maruti Suzuki's SUV market share increased from 16.8% in FY20 to 19.6% in FY26 (April-February), Takeuchi said, adding that the market share gain was driven by several new SUV launches such as e Vitara, Victoris, Jimny, Fronx, Grand Vitara and Brezza.

"In the next five to six years, seven new SUVs are planned to be introduced," Takeuchi noted.

In FY26 (April-February), the Brezza has been Maruti Suzuki's largest-selling SUV at 1,63,974 units, followed by the Fronx at 1,56,823 units.
