Maruti Suzuki India has become the country's first passenger vehicle (PV) manufacturer to achieve cumulative domestic sales of 3 crore units. The milestone, reached within 42 years of operations, underscores the company's sustained leadership in the Indian car market and its strong customer base.
The company achieved its first crore sales milestone in 28 years and 2 months. The second crore was reached in just 7 years and 5 months, while the third crore took a record 6 years and 4 months.
Among the 3 crore vehicles sold, the Alto remains the best-selling model with over 47 lakh units. It is followed by the WagonR at more than 34 lakh units and the Swift with over 32 lakh units. Compact SUVs such as the Brezza and Fronx also feature among the top 10 models in Maruti Suzuki's domestic portfolio.
Maruti Suzuki's journey began on December 14, 1983, when it handed over the first Maruti 800 to a customer. Over the decades, the company has expanded its line-up to 19 models with more than 170 variants across multiple powertrain and transmission options.
Commenting on the achievement, Maruti Suzuki MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said, "When I look at the length and breadth of India and think that 3 crore customers have placed their trust in Maruti Suzuki to realise their dream of mobility, it fills me with humility and gratitude."
"Yet, with car penetration at approximately 33 vehicles per 1,000 people, we know our journey is far from over. We will continue to make every possible effort to bring the joy of mobility to as many people as we can, while also being an asset to both the economy and the environment at the same time," he added.
