Two-phase year with GST-led recovery

FY26 saw a muted first half, with April to August impacted by weak consumer sentiment, inventory concerns and financing constraints.

Demand improved sharply from September after Goods and Services Tax (GST) 2.0 rate rationalisation, which enhanced affordability. The festive period, particularly October, saw record monthly retail sales of over 40,00,000 units, with momentum sustained through the rest of the year.

Rural demand and structural drivers

Rural retail growth: 13.05% y-o-y
Urban retail growth: 13.62% y-o-y

Improved farm incomes, better connectivity and rising mobility needs supported rural demand, helping narrow the gap with urban markets.

Powertrain transition strengthens in FY26

Three-wheeler EV penetration: 60.95%
PV CNG share: 21.98%
Two-wheeler EV share: 6.54%
PV EV share: 4.25%
CV EV share: 1.83%
Total EV retail: 24,52,000 units ( up 24.63% y-o-y)

The data indicated a steady shift towards alternative fuel vehicles across segments.

Inventory and financing trends improve

The PV inventory levels reduced to around 28 days by March 2026, as against more than 50 days a year earlier, reflecting improved demand-supply alignment.

Financing conditions also improved in the second half, supporting retail conversions, particularly in mass-market segments.

March 2026: Record close to FY26

The total auto retail in March stood at 26,92,449 units, up 25.28% y-o-y, the highest-ever March on record.

Two-wheelers: 19,51,006 units (up 28.68% y-o-y)
PVs: 4,40,144 units (up 21.48% y-o-y)
CVs: 1,02,536 units (up 15.12% y-o-y)
Three-wheelers: 1,09,777 units (up 10.52% y-o-y)
Tractors: 82,080 units (up 10.87% y-o-y)

The rural market outperformed the urban market in March, growing 26.49% compared to 23.82%.

"March 2026 was an emphatic close to a landmark financial year. The industry retailed 26,92,449 vehicles, the highest-ever March in FADA's records, posting a 25.28% y-o-y growth that was both broad-based and meaningful across categories," said Vigneshwar.

Outlook: Growth expected with caution

FADA indicated a cautiously positive outlook for FY27 with 74.72% dealers expecting growth, largely in the range of 3-7%.

However, risks remain from geopolitical disruptions, fuel price volatility and potential impact on consumer sentiment, even as structural demand drivers remain intact.
