From Maruti Suzuki e Vitara to MG Cyberster: The models expected to bolster electric car space

The electric car segment in India will witness the arrival of new models from the stable of Maruti, Tata, Kia and JSW MG in FY26. Will these models be able to spur demand?

The electric car segment is still at a nascent stage in India, accounting for less than 3% of the passenger vehicle (PV) volumes in the country last fiscal. However, with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors, Kia India, and JSW MG Motor India lining up interesting new models, the electric car space is expected to receive a much-needed boost in FY26.

At 1,07,645 units, electric car sales made up only 2.6% of the total PV volumes, which stood at 41,53,432 units in the domestic market in FY25, according to data from the industry body Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Maruti, the country's largest carmaker, will enter the electric vehicle (EV) space in FY26 with the launch of the e Vitara, while Tata will introduce the electric version of the Sierra SUV after driving in the Harrier.ev earlier this month. Kia and JSW MG are gearing up to launch the Carens Clavis EV and the Cyberster, respectively. However, the shortage of rare earth magnets, owing to export curbs by China, might hamper their production in the near term.

Maruti has already announced that the sales of the e Vitara will start in India before the end of September. This model is not only Maruti's maiden electric car but also that of its parent, Suzuki Motor Corporation.

Built on a ground-up battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform, Heartect-e, the e Vitara has 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery pack options. The top-of-the-line variant of the electric SUV will have a claimed range of over 500 km on a single full charge.

The e Vitara made its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. While it will be manufactured at Maruti's Gujarat plant, this global model will be shipped to more than 100 markets, including European nations and Japan.

MG Cyberster MG Cyberster

MG Cyberster

The Windsor EV has worked wonders for JSW MG since its launch, garnering sales of over 23,000 units in just seven months. The company will now launch the Cyberster, which is an electric sportscar.

Although the Cyberster is a luxury option, our sources have told us that it will be priced very competitively to attract more buyers. The price could be around Rs 70 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the most affordable electric cars in India. The vehicle has scissor doors, a first for any electric car in the country.

The Cyberster will come with dual motors, delivering 510 PS of maximum power and 725 Nm of peak torque. It is capable of reaching 100 kmph from a standstill in 3.2 seconds. With a 77 kWh battery pack on board, we are expecting a range of over 500 km on a single full charge.

Kia recently drove in the Carens Clavis, a premium addition to the Carens MPV brand. Expanding the Carens portfolio further, the carmaker will now launch the Carens Clavis EV.

Till now, Kia's focus has been the premium space when it comes to EVs with the introduction of models like the EV6 and the flagship EV9. The Carens Clavis EV will be the company's maiden mass-market offering in India.

While the Kia Carens Clavis EV will be unveiled in July, we expect it to have a range of over 400 km on a single full charge. Its main rival will be the MG Windsor EV.

Tata Sierra EV

Tata has the largest electric car portfolio among all the mass-market OEMs in India at present. The company had a share of 53.52% in the passenger EV segment in FY25. It offers the Tiago.ev, Tigor.ev, Punch.ev, Nexon.ev, Curvv.ev and Harrier.ev now.

While the company has already introduced the Harrier.ev in FY26, it will resurrect the Sierra brand this fiscal, albeit in an electric avatar, the Sierra.ev.

Like the Harrier.ev, we expect the Sierra.ev to have multiple battery pack options and a claimed range of over 500 km on a single full charge. This will make the Sierra.ev a formidable rival of the e Vitara and Hyundai's Creta Electric.
