Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on May 8 announced the deployment of an advanced AI-powered CCTV surveillance system at six metro stations between Byappanahalli and MG Road.

BMRCL officials said the system will enable comprehensive perimeter monitoring and AI-driven threat detection to ensure a safer commuting environment for passengers.

“The advanced surveillance system, commissioned on May 6, extends beyond station interiors, providing continuous monitoring of surrounding areas to enhance situational awareness for metro authorities,” the agency said in a statement.

A key component of this upgrade is the integration of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, which captures and analyses vehicle number plates near metro stations. Combined with AI-based video analytics, the system enables real-time identification of potential threats, anomalies, and suspicious activities, thereby proactively strengthening security along the metro corridor.

BMRCL Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao said, “Security remains a top priority for BMRCL. We continuously work towards implementing cutting-edge technologies that promote the safety and security of our passengers. The introduction of AI-powered surveillance and ANPR technology allows us to proactively monitor station environments, detect threats swiftly, and ensure a safer, more secure metro network for Bengaluru. This initiative reflects our commitment to operational excellence and public safety.”

“This deployment aligns with BMRCL's mission to adopt intelligent systems that not only improve operational efficiency but also instil a sense of security among metro commuters. As Bengaluru's metro network expands, BMRCL remains committed to integrating smart surveillance technologies that elevate the commuter experience and reinforce public safety across the entire metro system,” the statement added.
