Indians remember October 2 as Gandhi Jayanti, the day Mahatma Gandhi was born. It is a public holiday in the country, not to mention a dry day, as a mark of respect for the man they call the father of our nation.
But Indians aren’t the only ones who remember Gandhi on important occasions. On the eve of the Muslim festival of Muharram, the Government of Pakistan tweeted a picture that contained a quote by Gandhi about his take-away from the teachings of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the third Shia Imam.

violent resistance to the tyranny of Yazid.#Karbala #Muharram pic.twitter.com/NmiiEgJUPd— Govt of Pakistan (@pid_gov) September 30, 2017
“I learnt from Hussain how to achieve victory while being oppressed,” reads the quote attributed to Gandhi. Moneycontrol could not independently confirm the veracity of the quote but did find various mentions of it across the web.
Imam Hussain became the Imam of Shia after the death of his older brother Hasan. Hussain gathered support from his father’s supporters in Kufah and refused Muawiyah I’s request to let his son Yazid I succeed him. Hussain was later killed on his way to Kufah in the Battle of Karbala.
The annual day for Hussain, his family and his companions is the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. The day of his death, which occurred on the 10th day of Muharram, is observed to this day as the mourning of Muharram.
