The voting for the 45th US presidential elections gets underway. One enduring theme of the campaign has been how unpopular both candidates are, and it's pretty clear that the campaign didn't change the voters' minds about that.

European markets set for sharp fall. Dow futures, though, more than halves losses, down about 300 points. Gold has the biggest rally. Key Indian indices now trading way off day's low. 1:55 pm: Narayan Murthy says, "America had a chance to create history by electing Clinton". Irrespective of policies in US, Murthy believes India should strive to become more valuable to companies there so that policies automatically turn favourable to us. "Our challenge is to make ourselves attractive to our customers by bringing innovation, working harder and smarter," he says. 1:50 pm: Leo Puri, MD of UTI AMC concurs that there is difference betwen campaign rhetoric and how it is actually managed. But considering Trump's strong views on trade some impact might be felt there. He will have to show radical shift on immigration issues. "There is an idealogical shift,"he says. 1:45 pm: Oil stumbles as Trump stuns markets with White House win. West Texas Internediate (WTI) futures fall to a intra-day low of USD 43.07 per barrel, down over 4 percent from their last close and their lowest since September, before recovering to USD 44.51 a barrel.   1:42 pm: Nifty back above 8,400, recovers 400 points from day's lows. 1:38 pm: Vallabh Bhansali of Enam says, "there is no doubt that we dont really know Trump's mind. but don't believe he will carry out whatever he said (on trade with other countries) during campaign. Worries about recession are exaggerated."1:32 pm: "To be really historic we need to do a great job and I promise I will not let you down," Trump says. He concludes, "the campaign is over, our work for the American people will begin now."     1:29 pm: Indian market at day's high. Now down 2 percent. Sensex nearly 1,100 points and Midcap Index 780 points off lows. 1.24 pm: A positive tone coming through in Trump's remarks. Says he will look to harness the country's creative talent, build bridges and have great relations with other countries.1.23 pm: "We are going to rebuild our highways, roadways, tunnels, schools and infrastructure," he says. "America will settle for nothing lesser than the best". 1.21 pm: "It is time for us to come together as one united people. I will president for all Americans and it is very important for me," he says. "I congratulate Hillary Clinton for a hard-fought campaign."1.19 pm: Donald Trump, President-Elect of the United States, is now taking to the podium.1.16 pm: Trump's VP pick, Mike Pence, is now speaking. Nikkei, Hang Seng slip more than 1 percent each. 8:00 am: Of the 94 percent votes counted so far in Florida Trump leads by 1.4 lakh votes. 7:55 am: Hillary Clinton wins 10 seats: Rhode Island, Illinois, New York, Connecticut. Trump wins 15 seats: Missouri, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, The Dakotas, Kansas, Wyoming, Nebraska. 7:46 am: Donald Trump wins Okhlahoma, Missouri, Mississippi7:46 am: Hillary Clinton wins New York and Connecticut7:45 am: Clinton leads in 97 and Trump leads in 123; Trump leading in Florida 7:40 am Hillary Clinton set to win in New York7:35 am FII view: Khoon Goh of ANZ Research said that he sees the dollar paring back recent gains. Markets will be choppy until the outcome of the US polls.
The yen will be a currency which will swing depending on the outcome, he said. A Trump win will see a risk-off environment. Other risk-sensitive currencies like Mexican Peso will be sensitive to Trump’s odds of victory.

The US Dollar index will see an upside on a Clinton win. But if Trump prevails, then there will be a move down to 97 levels.

7:30 am Outlook: Speaking to CNBC-TV18 Ian Hui, JPMorgan Asset Management said that it is too early to call on US elections. “Keep an eye on Florida, North Carolina and Pennsylvania,” he said, adding that if Clinton wins, it will be a continuation of status quo. But if Trump wins, it will be seen as a headwind for the market.
He also said that Modi’s move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes has been a surprise announcement. It will be seen as a positive move in the fight against corruption, he said.

Asian markets open cautiously higher, as polling closes in some US states in the world's most closely watched election of recent times. Mexico's peso rallies while gold and the yen weakens as haven demand wanes.US equities closed higher on Tuesday, led by utilities, as investors eagerly awaited the results of the US presidential election.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose more than 100 points before closing about 73 points higher with 3M, McDonald's Travellers contributing the most gains. The index also broke above its 50-day moving average and traded lower earlier in the session. The S&P 500 gained 0.38 percent, as utilities gained around 0.7 percent, after briefly trading slightly lower.
