Monsoon rains enter cane-growing areas

India's south-west monsoon rains have entered the cane-growing areas of Maharashtra after crossing the rice, corn, rubber and coffee belts of the southern parts of the country, two sources at the weather office said on Friday.


Maharashtra is India's biggest sugar producer.

"Monsoon has entered Maharashtra after covering southern India," a source in the India Meteorological Department said.


India's monsoon rains were 12% above normal in the week to June 1, after hitting the southern coast two days ahead of expectations.
