Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, late Tuesday evening, said he had a “productive conversation” with US President Donald Trump. This meeting was solely focused on ending Ukraine's war with Russia as well as strengthening US-Ukraine coordination.
Taking to microblogging site X, Zelenskyy said the discussion centred around achieving a “just and lasting peace” and praised Trump for his commitment to halting the violence.
“It is truly a must to stop the killing as soon as possible. Many months could have already passed without war, had Russia not prolonged it,” he said.
Zelenskyy further noted that Trump has been briefed on battlefield developments, including a surge in Russian strikes on Kyiv and other cities. The two leaders also exchanged views on tightening sanctions against Moscow, said the Ukrainian President.
A productive conversation with President Trump, with the key focus of course being ending the war. We are grateful to @POTUS for all efforts toward a just and lasting peace. Zelenskyy said the pressure was taking a toll on Russia’s economy and expressed confidence in Trump’s firm stance. “That’s exactly why Moscow is so sensitive to this prospect and President Trump’s resolve,” he added.
The leaders also discussed broader defence cooperation and NATO aid.
Zelenskyy highlighted over $1 billion in pledged weapons from European allies such as the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, and confirmed ongoing collaboration. He also revealed that Ukraine has prepared a draft bilateral defence agreement with the US focused on drone technology.
“This could be one of the strongest defence agreements. We’re ready to finalise it,” he said.
Zelenskyy concluded by thanking Americans for their support. “Thank you to every American heart that supports our defence of life. Thank you, President Trump!”
Zelenskyy, on Monday, had claimed that foreign mercenaries from China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and African countries are now fighting alongside Russian troops. The statement came during his visit to Ukrainian front-line soldiers in Kharkiv’s 17th Separate Motorised Infantry Battalion on Monday.
President Trump, meanwhile, aimed at India over its continued oil imports from Russia.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticised India for profiting from re-exporting Russian oil and announced plans to impose higher tariffs.
The warning follows his recent announcement of a 25 percent reciprocal tariff on Indian goods and hints at further penalties related to energy trade with Moscow.
