Donald Trump Jr. has reignited a decades-old controversy while defending his father against Chelsea Clinton’s criticism of the ongoing White House East Wing demolition.

Clinton, in an op-ed for USA Today shared on X, accused President Donald Trump of “taking a wrecking ball to our heritage” and “targeting our democracy, and the rule-of-law.” She reflected on her childhood in the White House, calling it “a living symbol of the nation’s history and hope,” and criticised the renovation for allegedly proceeding “without a historic preservation review and seemingly without the involvement of any historians.”

She argued that the teardown reflected Trump’s “disregard for history,” calling it “a defining trait of President Trump’s second administration.” Clinton also drew parallels with his first term, citing how his administration ordered the Smithsonian Institution and the National Park Service to censor exhibits referencing slavery and accidentally removed mentions of the WWII plane Enola Gay from federal websites due to an automated censorship effort targeting LGBTQ+ terms like “gay.”

Trump Jr. hit back sharply on X, writing, “Lol, your parents tried stealing furniture and silverware from the White House… and let’s not talk about the intern. Sit this one out.”

The jab referred to a 2001 controversy in which the Clintons were accused of taking furniture and gifts from the White House that were meant to remain in the official residence. At the time, the Clintons said they believed the items were personal gifts to the family, but they returned $114,000 worth of items by May 2001, three months after leaving office.

Trump Jr.’s post also referenced the Monica Lewinsky scandal, a pointed personal dig unrelated to the ongoing White House construction or the Clintons’ earlier controversy.

The former president’s son has recently been on a spree of attacks targeting women associated with past White House administrations. Late Thursday night, he shared a meme falsely claiming that former First Lady Michelle Obama had a “urinal” installed in the White House.

While Trump Jr. has accused the Clintons of misappropriating furniture, it’s worth noting that former President Donald Trump himself was indicted by the FBI in 2022 for allegedly taking classified state documents from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Chelsea Clinton has not publicly responded to Trump Jr.’s remarks.
