Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled three new classes of intercontinental ballistic missiles during a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of Japan's defeat.
China showcased the Dong Feng-61, Dongfeng-5 (DF-5C), and Dong Feng-31BJ nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) for the first time during the parade.
The PLA also revealed its first air-launched nuclear missile, the JL-1, displayed on a military truck. This missile is notably smaller compared to the JL-3, a submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile also exhibited.
According to CCTV, the JL-1 and JL-3, together with the DF-61 and DF-31, mark the “first concentrated display” of the PLA’s “land, sea and air triad strategic nuclear forces,” described as a “strategic ace for safeguarding national sovereignty and defending national dignity.”
The Chinese military also rolled out its YJ-series hypersonic missiles, including the YJ-15, YJ-17, YJ-19, and YJ-20. Known as “Ying Ji” or “Eagle Attack,” these advanced missiles can be launched from ships or aircraft and are designed to disable or destroy large enemy vessels.
During the parade, China unveiled its HQ-29 space defense system, reportedly capable of taking down satellites. The country's largest-ever military display concluded with the release of 80,000 doves into the sky.
China also displayed at least two types of air-defence laser weapons in the parade, including one large laser that state-run TV said would be mounted on warships.
While the world is talking about Beijing showcasing ‘robot wolves’ during the parade. According to Chinese state media, these machines can perform frontline reconnaissance, deliver supplies, and carry out precision strikes on targets.
Flanked by Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, Xi used the occasion to project his vision of a new global order. “China firmly stands on the right side of history,” he declared in his opening speech. Warning of present-day tensions, he added, “Today humanity again has to choose between peace and war.”
