Air travel can be crowded, delayed and stressful. But for one traveller flying from Riga to Dubai, the experience turned into something almost surreal. A Russian woman discovered that she was the only passenger on the entire flight.

Marina Gilla, who was travelling from Latvia’s capital Riga to Dubai, shared her unusual experience on Instagram. In the short video she posted online, she walks through the aircraft cabin, showing long rows of empty seats with no other passengers in sight.

At one point she jokes that she has somehow ended up on a “VIP flight,” laughing as she points out the completely empty cabin behind her. The video quickly spread across social media platforms, with many users reacting with surprise and curiosity.

For most travellers, the idea of an entire commercial flight to themselves sounds almost impossible. Even during quieter travel periods, airlines usually have at least a handful of passengers on board. That is what made Gilla’s experience stand out.

In the video, she moves down the aisle filming the empty rows, occasionally turning the camera toward herself. Her caption suggested she could hardly believe the situation either. “When you are the only passenger on the plane to Dubai,” the on-screen text reads, followed by laughing emojis.

Online reactions ranged from disbelief to humour. Some viewers joked that she had accidentally booked a private jet without realising it. Others wondered whether the airline had run the flight despite extremely low demand or if last-minute cancellations had left the aircraft empty.

A few users pointed out that airlines sometimes still operate flights even with very few passengers because the aircraft needs to reach another destination for its next scheduled route. These so-called repositioning flights can occasionally fly with minimal occupancy.

Still, an aircraft carrying just one passenger remains rare enough to capture attention online.

The clip also prompted jokes about how the traveller could have chosen any seat in the cabin or stretched out across several rows. Some viewers imagined the cabin crew giving her unusually attentive service during the journey.

While airlines did not comment publicly on the specific flight, aviation experts say unusual passenger counts do occasionally happen, particularly when routes are new, schedules change or travel demand suddenly drops.

For Gilla, what began as an ordinary trip turned into a travel story that few passengers can claim. Instead of sharing the cabin with dozens or hundreds of other travellers, she had an entire aircraft to herself for the journey to Dubai.
