China’s Commerce Ministry has on April 10 reiterated its stance on the ongoing trade tensions with the US and said it will "continue to take resolute countermeasures to safeguard sovereignty, security and development interests".
On April 9, US President Donald Trump paused most of the hefty duties he had just imposed on dozens of countries even as he ratcheted up a trade war with China.
He kept the pressure on China, the world's No. 2 economy and second biggest provider of U.S. imports. Trump immediately hiked the tariff on Chinese imports to 125% from the 104% level that kicked in on Wednesday.
Beijing may again respond in kind after slapping 84% tariffs on US imports on Wednesday to match Trump's earlier tariff salvo. It has repeatedly vowed to "fight to the end" in the escalating trade war between the world's top two economies.
"If US insists on its own way, China will follow it to the end. There is no winner in a trade war, protectionism is a one-way road," said China's Commerce Ministry.
Meanwhile, China's Foreign Ministry said, "US' cause doesn't win the support of the people and will end in failure."
"China doesn't want to fight them, but will not fear when they come our way," the ministry added.
"China will not sit by and let international trade rules and multilateral system be undermined. China will not sit back and let legit rights and interests of Chinese people be deprived," the ministry added.
Taking further measures to oppose US bullying moves is not only aimed at protecting our own sovereignty, security and development interests, but it's also for safeguarding international fairness and justice, the ministry further said.
