Why Trump’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein are under fresh scrutiny — and what the FBI files may reveal

As Trump allies turn on him over the unreleased Epstein files, here’s what we know about the case, the conspiracy theories, and what’s still hidden.

The Trump administration is facing renewed pressure over its handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, after a series of abrupt reversals that have angered even the president’s staunchest supporters. What began last month as a high-profile endorsement of full transparency — triggered in part by Elon Musk’s public claim that Donald J. Trump was named in FBI records related to Epstein — has spiralled into a political firestorm, raising fresh questions about what’s contained in the long-withheld files, the New York Times reported.

After promising to expose the full scope of Epstein’s crimes and connections, the administration backtracked, citing lack of actionable evidence. That reversal has created a rift within Trump’s base, many of whom now suspect a cover-up. The backlash grew so intense that the US Justice Department, under Trump’s direction, asked a federal judge on Friday to unseal grand jury testimony from Epstein’s prosecution — a partial concession, though it’s unclear how revealing the records will be.

The origins of the Epstein case

Jeffrey Epstein’s criminal behaviour first came under serious scrutiny in 2006, after a joint investigation by the FBI and Florida police found he had paid teenage girls for sex and used Ghislaine Maxwell to recruit and manage his victims. Despite evidence of widespread abuse, Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to two state-level felonies in 2008, avoiding more serious federal charges.

It wasn’t until 2019 — following explosive reporting by The Miami Herald — that Epstein was re-arrested and charged with trafficking dozens of underage girls. He died in custody just weeks later, in what was officially ruled a suicide. Maxwell was later convicted of conspiring with Epstein and is now serving a 20-year sentence.

The political storm around the FBI files

What makes Epstein’s case so politically combustible is not just the gravity of his crimes, but the elite company he kept. Over the years, Epstein cultivated friendships with figures across the political spectrum — from Bill Clinton to Donald Trump — fuelling suspicions that his network of contacts may have included others involved in or complicit with his abuse.

That suspicion only deepened after Trump and his officials repeatedly vowed to declassify Epstein-related materials, only to suddenly announce there was “nothing more to see.” When US Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel recently stated that no further charges were warranted and that the much-rumoured “client list” did not exist, many conservatives accused the administration of betrayal.

Their anger intensified after reports surfaced that the FBI files include Trump’s name. While being mentioned in a file does not imply wrongdoing — such files often contain tips, witness statements, and speculation — Musk’s assertion and subsequent leaks brought unwanted attention to Trump’s past friendship with Epstein.

What we know about Trump’s connection to Epstein

Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein moved in the same high-society circles during the 1990s and early 2000s. Trump once called Epstein a “terrific guy” who “likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.” The two were seen at parties in Florida and New York, and Trump’s name appears in flight logs and social circles linked to Epstein.

Their relationship soured in 2004 after a real estate bidding war, and Trump has since claimed he distanced himself from Epstein and even banned him from Mar-a-Lago. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has never been charged or officially identified as a target in any Epstein-related investigation.

Still, his name resurfaced in 1996 and 2006 when Epstein victim Maria Farmer told both the NYPD and the FBI about an uncomfortable encounter with Trump in Epstein’s office. While Farmer said she had no evidence of criminal behaviour, she raised concerns about Trump’s closeness to Epstein and what she described as a leering interaction. The FBI has declined to comment on whether Farmer’s statements were followed up.

Why conspiracy theories thrive around Epstein

The Epstein saga includes many elements that fuel conspiracy theories: extreme wealth, political power, underage abuse, a lenient plea deal, and a sudden death under suspicious circumstances. The secrecy around the files has given rise to claims — often baseless — that a vast elite paedophile ring was being protected by government agencies.

These theories, including QAnon and Pizzagate, have taken deep root among segments of Trump’s base. Many believed that Trump, upon returning to power, would finally unmask a hidden cabal. The administration’s decision to keep Epstein’s investigative files sealed struck them as a betrayal of that mission.

Trump has responded with growing frustration, calling the case “boring” and dismissing the anger from his base as the result of Democratic manipulation. On social media last week, he accused his “PAST supporters” of falling for a hoax and reiterated that there was “nothing there.”

What happens next?

On Friday, in a bid to quell public outrage, the Justice Department filed a motion to unseal grand jury testimony from the Epstein prosecution. While this marks a shift, such materials are typically limited in scope and may not offer the broad answers critics seek. Judges are also reluctant to release grand jury records due to longstanding legal protections for victims and witnesses.

What remains undisclosed are the wider investigative files — which likely contain a mix of credible leads, unreliable tips, and unsubstantiated gossip. Whether Trump’s name appears in those materials, and in what context, may never be fully known unless the files are released in full.

For now, the administration’s retreat from transparency has only deepened the sense of suspicion — and ensured that the shadow of Epstein will continue to hang over Trump’s political future.
