Maurene Comey, who was the federal prosecutor in Manhattan who worked on the cases against Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jeffrey Epstein was fired by Justice Department, according to Associated Press.
Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, was dismissed without any explanation but was given a memo citing the president’s Article II authority to terminate federal employees, according to two unnamed sources.
Comey, a seasoned lawyer in the prestigious Southern District of New York, handled high-profile prosecutions, including the sex trafficking case against Jeffrey Epstein and the recent trial of Sean Combs.
Who is Maurene Comey?
She successfully prosecuted Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite linked to Jeffrey Epstein, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 for aiding Epstein in sexually abusing underage girls.
Epstein, a wealthy financier and convicted sex offender, was facing federal sex-trafficking charges involving minors before he died by suicide in jail in 2019. He had pleaded not guilty, and the case was dropped following his death.
The Epstein case has recently gained attention after the Trump administration reversed its earlier decision to release documents believed to contain significant information about Epstein and his alleged associates, a move that upset some of Trump’s supporters.
Maurene Comey also prosecuted Sean Combs, who is scheduled for sentencing on October 3 after being convicted of transporting women to perform in drug-fueled sexual shows. Combs, 55, remains in jail in Brooklyn and was acquitted of the most serious charges he faced.
Maurene Comey is the eldest daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, who was dismissed by President Donald Trump during his first term. James Comey, along with former CIA Director John Brennan, is currently under investigation.
Trump has frequently criticized both Brennan and James Comey over their involvement in probes into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, which Trump won.
The Department of Justice has been dismissing prosecutors connected to cases involving Trump or his political allies. Recently, Attorney General Pam Bondi fired several DOJ employees working under Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is investigating Trump’s handling of classified documents and efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.
