Adolf Hitler Uunona, 59, a member of Namibia’s Swapo party, is poised to win a second consecutive term in the Ompundja constituency on November 26. The politician, who gained international attention in 2020 due to his controversial name, said his father “probably didn’t understand what Adolf Hitler stood for. As a child, I saw it as a totally normal name.”
Uunona generally goes by Adolf in public and in official documents, noting it is now “too late” to change his name. He emphasized, “The fact I have this name does not mean I want to conquer Oshana. It doesn’t mean I’m striving for world domination.”
Despite global curiosity about his name, Uunona’s previous election victories in 2015 and 2020 were overwhelming, and he is expected to maintain his seat with another decisive majority. He has clarified that he has no connection to Nazi ideology, and the name remains a unique part of his political identity.
Who is Adolf Hitler Uunona
Adolf Hitler Uunona is a long-time member of the Swapo party, which has governed Namibia since its independence in 1990. Known locally as a dedicated anti-apartheid campaigner, Uunona commands respect in his constituency.
Uunona first made headlines in 2020 when he contested the local bodies elections in Namibia, and five years later, he is back in the news for the same reasons.
The German connection
Namibia’s connection to Germany stems from its colonial past. Between 1884 and 1915, the territory formed part of German South West Africa. During this period, thousands of Nama, Herero, and San people were killed in what some historians describe as the “forgotten genocide.” Today, German-named towns and small German-speaking communities remain across Namibia, reflecting the colonial legacy.
