In a big win for Democrats, Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City in one of the most stunning political upsets in the city’s history.
The 34-year-old became New York City's youngest and first Muslim mayor. He will replace Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped his re-election bid in September but remained on the ballot.
Mamdani was a first-term New York assemblyman and a democratic socialist who polled an abysmal two percent as late as January. Observers say he touched a chord with voters with his passionate attention to bread-and-butter issues, full of plans to freeze rent, offer free bus service, and start city-run groceries. The mayor will see a $116 billion annual budget, managing key services including policing and education, and the office often serves as a platform for national political ambitions.
In his first reaction after Mamdani’s landmark win, US President Donald Trump attributed the Republican Party’s poor performance to his absence from the ballot and the impact of government shutdowns.
The municipal election had turned into a direct fight between Trump and Mamdani. Trump repeatedly referred to Mamdani as a “Communist lunatic” and a “disaster waiting to happen”.
What does Mamdani’s win mean for Democrats?
Mamdani’s win comes at a moment when the Democratic party has been steadily losing registered voters across the United States while struggling to articulate a coherent response to Trump’s authoritarian actions.
This is a sign that the party can win, so long as its candidates appeal to the base’s most enthusiastic voters and focus on issues affecting the working class, like affordability and housing.
In a heavily Democratic city like New York, Mamdani’s ascend may not be that easy as some Democratic establishment figures in the state were not at ease about his win. “A Mamdani victory is a serious political problem for those in the party who believe, as we do, that our primary focus must be on flipping red and purple seats blue, expanding the map for Democrats, and creating a path back to Congress and the White House,” Matt Bennett, executive vice president of center-left think tank Third Way, told MSNBC.
His win may also impact how the Democratic party performs in next year’s midterm elections for the US House of Representatives and some seats in the upper house or Senate.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump earlier said he may not contribute Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to New York City, if Mamdani wins.
According to a New York State Comptroller report in April , the city will require $7.4bn in federal funding for the fiscal year 2026.
The report, published on April 28, showed that the federal funding accounts for 6.4 percent of total spending. The remaining funds came from state taxes, fees and other income. Mamdani may need support from his fellow Democrats if Trump tries to go after New York City.
What does Mamdani’s win mean for Republicans?
In his first speech after his victory, Mamdani said he and his city are coming for President Trump.
"If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him," Mamdani said at his victory speech in Brooklyn Tuesday night. "And if there's any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power."
Mamdani may become the new preferred target for Republicans. “The Republican Party will accurately portray Mamdani as the new face of the Democratic Party and emblematic of the extreme, leftist and socialist direction of the Democrats. By comparison, Bernie Sanders and AOC appear moderate to most Americans. His election will alarm the majority of centrists in the country and alienate those voters,” GOP strategist Adolfo Franco told Newsweek.
Mamdani has pledged to freeze rent increases, make buses free citywide and provide universal childcare, among other Big Apple proposals. According to Franco, this may lead to human and capital flight from New York, as well as higher taxes and increased crime.
Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently said Mamdani’s would benefit Republicans politically, while being bad for the city.
He made the comment when retweeting a post on X by Elon Musk, who asserted that Mamdani "is the future of the Democratic Party."
