US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Ukraine’s senior negotiator Rustem Umerov in Miami on Thursday, the White House confirmed, with both sides scheduled to meet again on Friday.
“Yesterday’s meeting between American and Ukrainian representatives in Miami was productive, and progress was made. They will reconvene later today after briefing their respective leaders,” a White House official said. No further details were immediately available, Reuters reported.
Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, briefed the Ukrainian delegation on their earlier discussions in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a second source who spoke on condition of anonymity with news agency Reuters
The Miami talks were not formal negotiations on a US.-backed peace plan but were agreed upon prior to the Moscow meeting, the source added.
In Moscow, Putin met Witkoff and Kushner for five hours, focusing on the U.S.-proposed settlement for the war in Ukraine, where Russia launched a full-scale invasion in 2022. Putin later described the talks as “very useful.”
Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said on Friday that the discussions had reached a level of understanding that made them “truly friendly.”
The Miami meetings reflect ongoing high-level diplomacy between the United States and Ukraine, following direct engagement with Russia aimed at advancing a potential settlement in the conflict.
