Since January, the Donald Trump administration in the United States has revoked roughly 80,000 non-immigrant visas, a senior United States Department of State official confirmed on Wednesday. That figure includes about 8,000 student visas. The move reflects a sweeping effort by the administration to crack down on foreigners who flout US laws or are deemed a risk to national security.

Why the revocations happened

The reasons behind many of the cancellations include offences such as driving under the influence, assault and theft. According to Reuters, nearly half of the visa revocations this year stem from these three crimes.

A senior State Department official told Reuters that “these three crimes accounted for almost half of revocations this year.”

A department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, said: “Our message is clear. Entry to America is a privilege, not a right, and we will always put the safety and interests of the American people first.”

Political and policy context

The visa cancellations are part of a broader push by the Trump administration to toughen immigration policies. The administration has also warned that foreign nationals, including students and work visa holders, could face deportation for expressing support for the Palestinian cause or criticising Israel’s actions in Gaza.

What this means for students and visa-holders

For many foreign students and temporary workers, the revocations add a layer of uncertainty. Those on F-1 (student) or H-1B (work) visas may now face stricter scrutiny. Moreover, free speech within the U.S. becomes more complicated when statements abroad can lead to visa loss or deportation.

The takeaway

The Trump administration’s decision to revoke 80,000 visas underscores a clear message: the US is signalling that compliance with laws and alignment with its policy priorities matter. For anyone on a non-immigrant visa, especially students, this signals that lawful behaviour alone may no longer be enough — political expressions and broader perceptions now also carry consequences.
