US Justice Department releases over 3 million new pages of Epstein Files: What the latest document dump reveals

The disclosures are being made under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a law passed after months of public pressure demanding greater transparency over Epstein’s crimes and the role of federal authorities.

The US Justice Department has released millions of additional documents related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, significantly expanding public access to records about what the government knew of his sexual abuse of underage girls and his connections to influential figures.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said on Friday that more than 3 million pages of documents have now been made public as part of the latest disclosure. The files were uploaded to the Justice Department’s website and form part of records that were withheld during an earlier release in December.

Blanche said all images of women were being redacted aside from those of Ghislaine Maxwell, the accomplice of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The disclosures are being made under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a law passed after months of public pressure demanding greater transparency over Epstein’s crimes and the role of federal authorities. The law requires the government to release investigative files related to Epstein and his longtime associate and former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell.

The Justice Department had missed a December 19 deadline set by Congress to release the full set of records. Officials later said hundreds of lawyers were assigned to review the files to determine which information needed to be redacted in order to protect the identities of victims of sexual abuse.

According to the department, the volume of material under review has grown to about 5.2 million documents, including duplicate records.

In late December, the Justice Department had already released tens of thousands of pages of material. Those records included photographs, interview transcripts, call logs, and court filings. Many of the documents were either previously made public or heavily redacted.

Among the documents released earlier were flight logs showing that Donald Trump traveled on Epstein’s private jet in the 1990s, before the two later fell out. Several photographs of former President Bill Clinton were also included in the files. Neither Trump nor Clinton has been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, and both have said they had no knowledge of his abuse of underage girls.

The December release also included transcripts of grand jury testimony from FBI agents. In those testimonies, agents described interviews with girls and young women who said they were paid to perform sex acts for Epstein.

Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail cell in August 2019, about a month after he was arrested and charged with federal sex trafficking offenses.

Earlier, in 2008 and 2009, Epstein served jail time in Florida after pleading guilty to soliciting prostitution from a person under the age of 18. At the time, investigators had gathered evidence that he sexually abused underage girls at his Palm Beach home. However, federal prosecutors agreed not to pursue further charges in exchange for his guilty plea to lesser state offenses.

In 2021, a federal jury in New York convicted Ghislaine Maxwell of sex trafficking for helping Epstein recruit underage victims. The British socialite was sentenced to 20 years in prison and is currently serving her sentence at a prison camp in Texas, after being transferred from a federal prison in Florida. Maxwell has denied any wrongdoing.

US prosecutors never charged anyone else in connection with Epstein’s abuse. However, one of his victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, accused Epstein in lawsuits of arranging sexual encounters for her, when she was 17 and 18, with politicians, business leaders, academics, and other powerful individuals. All of those accused denied her claims.

Among those named was Britain’s Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor after being stripped of his royal titles. He denied having sex with Giuffre but later settled her lawsuit for an undisclosed amount.
