Ukraine has pledged to purchase $100 billion worth of American weapons, funded by Europe, in an effort to secure US guarantees for its safety following a peace settlement with Russia, according to a report from the Financial Times.
Additionally, the report mentioned that under these proposals, Kyiv and Washington would negotiate a $50 billion deal to collaborate with Ukrainian companies on drone production. These companies have been at the forefront of drone technology since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
The document states, "Ukraine will promise to buy USD 100 billion of US weapons financed by Europe." In exchange, Kyiv is seeking solid US security guarantees as part of the post-peace agreement.
These proposals were shared with European partners ahead of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's planned discussions at the White House with President Donald Trump, according to four sources familiar with the matter.
During the high-profile summit in the White House, attended by both Zelenskyy and several European allies shortly after discussions in Alaska, Trump assured the Ukrainian President that Washington would play a role in ensuring Ukraine's security under any eventual peace settlement with Russia. Yet his refusal to outline concrete mechanisms has left uncertainty about how far Washington will go, the New York Times reported.
Ukrainian officials have not provided a detailed list of the weapons being negotiated, but they emphasise the urgent need for at least 10 US-made Patriot air defence systems to protect cities and critical infrastructure. They also seek additional missile systems and other equipment.
The proposed $50 billion drone partnership with American companies remains unclear, as there are no specifics on how the funds would be allocated between purchases and investments. However, Kyiv considers this plan a crucial step toward strengthening its domestic defence sector through collaboration with Washington.
