When Tommy Lynch woke up one morning in the United Kingdom, the last thing he expected to see was his own skin turning bright blue. Alarmed by the strange colour on his hands and parts of his face, Lynch feared something had gone seriously wrong and decided to go straight to hospital.

At first glance, the situation looked worrying. Bright blue skin is not exactly a common sight, and Lynch understandably feared he might be having some kind of medical emergency. But doctors soon realised the explanation was far less dramatic.

The colour had not come from any illness or chemical reaction. Instead, it had rubbed off from the brand new navy blue bedsheets he had slept on the night before.

According to reports, Lynch had recently bought the bedsheets and used them straight away without washing them first. During the night, some of the excess dye from the fabric transferred onto his skin. By the time he woke up, the colour had stained parts of his body enough to make it look like his skin itself had turned blue.

Once doctors figured out what had happened, the panic quickly faded. The stain was harmless and could simply be washed off. Lynch was reassured that nothing was medically wrong and that the dye had only temporarily coloured his skin.

Looking back, Lynch later joked about the incident. When he first saw himself, he said he thought he looked like a character from the film Avatar. What began as a frightening morning soon turned into an odd story he could laugh about.

The incident also highlighted something people often forget. New bedsheets and clothing frequently contain excess dye left over from the manufacturing process. If they are used straight out of the package, that dye can sometimes rub off onto skin or other surfaces.

That is why manufacturers usually recommend washing new fabrics before using them. A simple wash removes extra dye and any chemicals left from the production process.

In Lynch’s case, the result was dramatic enough to send him rushing to the hospital. But by the end of the day, what looked like a strange medical mystery turned out to be nothing more than an unfortunate encounter with unwashed bedsheets.
