US President Donald Trump will host Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the White House on November 10, marking the first-ever visit by a Syrian leader to Washington, an administration official said on Saturday.
The meeting, yet to be formally announced, follows Trump’s earlier encounter with al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia in May, the first meeting between the two countries’ leaders in 25 years. The May interaction, held on the sidelines of Trump’s talks with Gulf Cooperation Council leaders, signaled a major diplomatic shift for Syria as it attempts to emerge from decades of isolation following the Assad family’s 50-year rule.
Al-Sharaa, who once had a $10 million US bounty on his head under his former alias Abu Mohammed al-Golani, was previously linked to al-Qaida and fought against American troops in Iraq before being imprisoned by US forces.
During his upcoming visit, al-Sharaa is expected to sign an agreement formalizing Syria’s participation in the US-led coalition against ISIS, the official said.
The White House meeting will be the first between a Syrian and an American president since Hafez al-Assad met Bill Clinton in Geneva in 2000.
The talks come as Trump pushes for Middle East stability following a fragile ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. While the truce has largely held since October 10, Israeli strikes in Gaza earlier this week killed over 100 people, posing the most serious test to the agreement so far.
News of the planned Trump–al-Sharaa meeting was first reported by Axios.
