US President Donald Trump has indicated that his administration is considering a 100% tariff on all imported semiconductors and chips a significant move aimed at strengthening domestic production.
During a meeting in the Oval Office with Apple CEO Tim Cook, Trump highlighted the proposed tariffs as part of a broader strategy to encourage U.S.-based manufacturing.
“So 100% tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the US. But if you’ve made a commitment to build (in the US), or if you’re in the process of building (in the US), as many are, there is no tariff," the President said.
The proposed measure is designed to push international tech companies to set up or grow their manufacturing operations in the United States, aiming to lessen dependence on overseas supply chains. Trump pointed out that firms such as Apple could take advantage of the exemption due to their growing investment in U.S.-based production.
“But the good news for companies like Apple is if you’re building in the US or have committed to build, without question, committed to build in the US, there will be no charge," Trump added.
