Donald Trump Says Hamas Cannot Be Allowed To Remain In Gaza

US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his strong position on Hamas’ role in the Gaza Strip, stating that the group “cannot be allowed to stay" in the territory. In an interview with Axios on Monday, he referenced the October 2023 terrorist attack as a powerful reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Hamas.

Trump also said that Hamas was unlikely to release the hostages without a change in circumstances, but stopped short of fully endorsing Israel’s plan to attack and occupy Gaza City.

“I have one thing to say: remember October 7, remember October 7," Trump told Axios, referring to the attack that killed more than 1,200 people in Israel and led to the abduction of around 250 others.

He emphasized the difficulty of rescuing the hostages, stating it was always going to be “very rough to get them,” and added that Hamas “are not going to let the hostages out in the current situation,” according to Axios.

Netanyahu’s office said that during Sunday’s call, they “discussed Israel’s plans to take control of the remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza to end the war through the release of the hostages and the defeat of Hamas.”
