Trump's name added to Institute of Peace signage ahead of Rwanda-DRC deal: 'Greatest dealmaker in nation's history'

US President Donald Trump’s name has been added on the building and signage around the US Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, DC.

Taking to X, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote, “President Trump will be remembered by history as the President of Peace. It’s time our State Department display that."

“Welcome to the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. The best is yet to come,” the State Department posted on X, announcing it had renamed the institute “to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history.”

The move comes after the Trump administration attempted takeover of the Institute of Peace earlier this year.

The administration removed staff and installed its own leadership before a federal judge declared those actions unlawful, calling the effort a "gross usurpation of power." The nonprofit organisation, which is funded by the US Congress, has been operating in a holding pattern ever since.

On being asked about the decision to emblazon the building with the president's name, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly told Reuters the US Institute of Peace had been renamed for the president.

"Now, the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace, which is both beautifully and aptly named after a president who ended eight wars in less than a year, will stand as a powerful reminder of what strong leadership can accomplish for global stability. Congratulations, world!" she said.

The assertion that Trump has ended eight wars this year is heavily contested, with many pointing out that several of the conflicts he cites -- including the Israel-Hamas war -- remain far from resolved.

His name appeared on the Washington, DC headquarters ahead of a planned peace agreement signing on Thursday between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

A former USIP official was quoted as saying by CNN: “It’s pretty ironic that he (Trump) put his name on an institution he destroyed.”
