US President Donald Trump once again claimed credit for resolving tensions between India and Pakistan following their recent four-day military clash, which he warned had the potential to escalate into a “nuclear conflict.”
Making the remarks at a trilateral peace agreement signing ceremony with the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House, Trump also mentioned that “five or six planes” were shot down during the conflict. However, he did not clarify whether these losses were on one side or a combined total from both countries.
“As President, my highest aspiration is to bring peace and stability to the world. Today’s signing follows our success with India and Pakistan,” he said.
“They were going at it, they were going at it big and they were two great leaders that came together just prior to what would have been a tremendous conflict, as you know, a nuclear conflict, probably,” Trump further added.
After the signing of the accords, the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan also stated that they would nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for the historic agreement.
This is not the first time Trump has made such claims; he has been asserting this since May 10, when the hostilities between the two countries began to ease. However, Indian officials have consistently denied these statements.
New Delhi has consistently maintained that the cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was achieved through direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries.
Air Chief Marshal AP Singh confirmed on Saturday that India’s decision to enforce the ceasefire was unilateral and not influenced by external mediation. Speaking at a lecture in Bengaluru, he described the conflict as a “high-tech war” that caused significant damage to Pakistan’s military infrastructure within 80 to 90 hours, forcing Pakistan to seek a truce.
He also confirmed that the Indian Air Force downed at least five Pakistani fighter jets and one large aircraft, while targeting and damaging critical airbases and command centers.
