The White House has announced that US President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, August 15, in Anchorage, Alaska.
Officials have described the upcoming summit as a "listening exercise" for President Trump, suggesting that the primary goal is to hear Russia’s stance rather than to negotiate immediate solutions. Expectations for a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine have been downplayed ahead of the meeting.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt emphasized that Trump agreed to the face-to-face discussion to understand better how to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
“President getting in a room with the President of Russia — sitting face to face rather than speaking over the telephone — will give this President the best indication of how to end this war,” she said.
“President Trump is determined to try and end this war and stop the killing,” she further added.
