After Russian President Vladimir Putin offered direct talks with Ukraine on May 15, the move was welcomed by US President Donald Trump, who expressed a desire to focus on “rebuilding and trade” with both nations.
Trump described it as a “great day” for both Russia and Ukraine, adding that ending the three-year war would make the world “much better” and help save countless lives.
"A potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine! Think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved as this never ending “bloodbath” hopefully comes to an end. It will be a whole new, and much better, WORLD. I will continue to work with both sides to make sure that it happens. The USA wants to focus, instead, on Rebuilding and Trade. A BIG week upcoming!" Trump posted on his Truth social account.
Putin has offered to resume direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15, marking a potential turning point after three years of war. His proposal came shortly after European leaders urged both sides to commit to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire starting Monday.
“We propose to the Kyiv authorities to resume the talks that they broke off in 2022, and, I emphasise, without any preconditions,” Putin stated.
US President Donald Trump welcomed the move, issuing his remarks shortly after Putin announced Moscow’s readiness to return to the negotiating table in Istanbul, responding to calls from Kyiv and European leaders for a ceasefire and renewed dialogue.
