US President Donald Trump has announced a "total reset" with China following a prolonged trade standoff sparked by his administration's tariff measures.
Trump posted on his Truth Social where he said productive meeting took place in Switzerland between US and Chinese officials. "A very good meeting today with China, in Switzerland. Many things discussed, much agreed to. A total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner," he wrote.
Trump added that the discussions aimed at opening up Chinese markets to American businesses were progressing well. “We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business. GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!” he stated.
High-level tariff discussions between U.S. and Chinese officials, seen as crucial to global economic stability, wrapped up Saturday after more than ten hours of talks and are set to resume on Sunday, an official confirmed.
The negotiations took place at the historic 18th-century Villa Saladin, a former estate overlooking Lake Geneva now owned by the Swiss government. The U.S. delegation included Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, while China's team was led by Vice Premier He Lifeng.
Last month, Trump increased U.S. tariffs on China to a total of 145%, prompting China to retaliate with a 125% levy on American imports. These high tariffs effectively create a trade boycott between the two nations, disrupting trade that exceeded $660 billion last year.
Before the talks commenced, Trump indicated on Friday that the U.S. might consider lowering its tariffs on China, stating in a Truth Social post that an "80% tariff seems right," leaving the final decision to Scott.
The latest round of talks comes after weeks of deadlock between the two economic giants over tariff-related issues.
