One of US President Donald Trump’s sharpest critics continues to be a member of his own family. His niece, Mary L. Trump, a clinical psychologist and author, has strongly criticised the president’s decision to launch a joint military operation with Israel against Iran.
Speaking on her YouTube channel, Mary warned that the conflict would have serious consequences.
“This war is going to cost untold lives and untold billions of dollars,” Mary Trump said on her YouTube channel.
“And it’s going to cost us something else as well: whatever is left of our reputation,” she added.
Mary also argued that although Iranians have long faced repression under their government, she does not believe the current military action is intended to help them.
"The Iranian people have suffered long and horribly under the cruel and repressive authoritarian theocracy currently in power. They deserve to be free, and they deserve the ability to determine their own system of governance," Mary said.
"But the man who is bombing their country has no interest in them, and he has no plan to create the conditions in which they can become free, or support the efforts to create an alternative to the current regime," she added.
Mary further claimed that her uncle’s motivations were driven by personal concerns.
"For Donald, there is one reason and one reason alone. He's in trouble, and he knows it," Mary said.
"This isn't simply about changing the subject. That, of course, would be bad enough. This is to keep himself and the world from knowing what an inept, depraved, compromised fraud he is," she added.
She also suggested that the move to go to war aligned with geopolitical pressures and Trump’s own interests.
"This is about his unfathomable desperation to avoid being humiliated," Mary said.
"Donald Trump has taken us to war at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Israel. But that wouldn't have been enough of a reason if doing so didn't also coincide with his own self-interest," she added.
Mary Trump has repeatedly criticised the president in public forums over the years, including television appearances, podcasts and through her books.
Her most widely known work is the 2020 bestseller Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man. The book provides a detailed account of the Trump family and Donald Trump’s upbringing.
In it, Mary recounts personal memories and conversations with relatives and acquaintances. The book also includes legal and financial records as well as email exchanges in an attempt to construct an unauthorised biography of the president.
Mary also acknowledged that she was one of the sources for a New York Times investigation that examined the Trump family’s involvement in a tax controversy.
Ahead of the book’s release, Trump’s brother Robert attempted to block publication, arguing that Mary had violated a non-disclosure agreement she signed as part of a 2001 family lawsuit settlement. The attempt ultimately failed and the book was published.
