US President Donald Trump on Monday urged China to increase its purchases of American soybeans to help address domestic shortages and reduce its trade surplus with the United States.
"China is concerned about its shortage of soybeans. Our excellent farmers produce the most robust soybeans. I hope China will quickly quadruple its soybean orders. This would also significantly reduce China’s trade deficit with the USA. We will provide rapid service. Thank you, President Xi," Trump stated.
These comments come amid ongoing tariff disputes between the two nations, particularly during Trump's presidency, when Washington imposed tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of Chinese goods.
According to Vice President JD Vance, President Trump has not yet decided on whether to impose tariffs on China for its purchases of Russian oil, citing the complexities of Washington's relationship with Beijing.
“The President has said he’s considering it, but he hasn’t made any firm decisions,” Vance told Fox News on Sunday. He was responding to a question about whether China might face similar measures to those reportedly being considered for countries like India, which also imports Russian oil.
“Obviously, the China issue is a bit more complicated because our relationship with China influences many other factors that are unrelated to the Russian situation,” Vance stated.
