Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki on assuming office, describing her appointment as “a shining example of women empowerment.”
Speaking at a rally in Imphal, the Manipur capital, Modi said India and Nepal shared deep historical, cultural and faith-based ties, and assured that New Delhi stood firmly with the people of Nepal during its transitional phase.
“I want to congratulate Karki on behalf of 140 crore Indians. I am confident that she will pave the way for peace, stability, and prosperity in Nepal,” the prime minister said.
Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal's first woman prime minister on Friday night, heading an interim government. “Karki occupying the top post of that country is an example of women's empowerment,” Modi added.
He also said, "Today, I will praise every person in Nepal who has kept the democratic values supreme even in such an unstable environment."
Taking about the Neplali youth, he said, “For the last few days, Nepal’s youth can be seen working hard to clean and paint the roads of Nepal. I have also seen their pictures on social media. Their positive thinking and positive work are not only inspiring but also a clear indication of Nepal’s new rise. I wish Nepal all the best for its bright future."
Karki's appointment followed days of political uncertainty after the K P Sharma Oli government was forced to resign amid a nationwide agitation triggered by a social media ban. Karki was chosen after consultations between President Paudel, Nepal's military leadership, and youth protesters who had led the movement.
The prime minister also praised the resilience of Nepali citizens, noting that young men and women had been cleaning and painting public buildings in recent days despite the political upheaval.
"I also want to congratulate the people of Nepal who, despite such turbulent times, have kept democratic values supreme," Modi said, drawing applause from the crowd.
Reaffirming India’s support, he emphasised that the two nations were “moving forward together” and reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to Nepal’s democratic journey and its aspirations for stability.
