Britain’s former Prince Andrew is being held in custody without any special treatment following his arrest in connection with alleged misconduct in public office linked to Jeffrey Epstein. Despite his past royal status, police procedures apply equally, and he is being treated like any other suspect.
Andrew was arrested at 8:00 am local time at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Thames Valley Police later confirmed that a man in his sixties had been detained and that searches were being conducted at addresses in Norfolk and Berkshire.
Policing commentators told the BBC that Andrew would not receive preferential treatment. Under UK law, suspects can initially be held for 24 hours. If detention extends beyond six hours, they must be moved to a designated custody suite.
Danny Shaw, a policing commentator, told the BBC that the maximum period of detention without charge is 96 hours, but only with multiple extensions approved by senior officers and a Magistrate’s Court. In most cases, suspects are held for 12 or 24 hours before being charged or released pending further investigation.
Shaw said Andrew would be placed in a standard cell with 'a bed and a toilet' while awaiting questioning. It is not publicly known where he is being held.
The arrest is reportedly linked to allegations that Andrew shared confidential government documents with Jeffrey Epstein during his time as UK trade envoy in 2010 and 2011. The claims are said to stem from material included in a recent release of files by the US Justice Department.
Police have not publicly detailed the evidence, and the arrest does not imply guilt.
Andrew was previously stripped of his royal titles and military honours amid scrutiny over his association with Epstein.
Andrew’s relationship with Epstein drew intense global attention after Virginia Giuffre accused him of sexual misconduct when she was 17, alleging she had been trafficked by Epstein. Giuffre died by suicide last April.
An email reportedly sent by Ghislaine Maxwell included a photograph appearing to show Andrew with his arm around Giuffre — an image that became central to public scrutiny of his ties to Epstein.
The current arrest is not directly related to Giuffre’s allegations but marks a significant development in the continuing fallout from the Epstein scandal.
