Hunter Biden has revealed that his father Joe Biden's disastrous performance during the 2024 presidential debate against Donald Trump was due, in part, to the use of Ambien—a prescription sleep aid—along with extreme fatigue from extensive travel.
“I know exactly what happened in that debate,” Hunter told YouTuber Andrew Callaghan in an interview released on the anniversary of Joe Biden stepping down from his re-election campaign and endorsing then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
“He flew around the world. He’s 81 years old. He’s tired. They give him Ambien to be able to sleep and he gets up on the stage and looks like a deer in the headlights,” Hunter said, explaining why his father was fumbling over his words during the debate.
The debate, held on June 27, 2024, proved to be a turning point in Biden’s re-election bid. The former president appeared slow, unfocused and at times disoriented. At one point, he bizarrely claimed to have “finally beat Medicare.”
The debate sparked intense backlash, both from the public and within the Democratic party, forcing Biden to opt out of the race.
“They said, ‘We are going to blow up the party if you don’t drop out,’” Hunter revealed. “‘We’re going to protest this all the way up for the next month, all the way up to the convention.’”
According to Hunter, Biden had travelled to Europe twice in June—first to France for D-Day commemorations, and then to Italy for the G7 summit—before hunkering down at Camp David for debate preparation. He arrived late to inspect the CNN debate venue and reportedly spent over four hours in seclusion at a nearby hotel before taking the stage.
Ambien, commonly used to treat short-term sleep problems, is known to carry increased side effects for individuals over the age of 70. Biden was 81 at the time of the debate.
Notablu, the drug was not mentioned in Biden’s publicly released annual medical records or in a February 2024 memo from White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor.
O’Connor, a longtime Biden confidant, later invoked the Fifth Amendment when questioned by a House committee about Biden’s health.
Hunter also addressed the backlash from Democrats following the debate, playing down its intensity. “The people who came out against him were nobody, except … Speaker Emeritus [Nancy] Pelosi [D-Calif.] did not give a full-throated endorsement,” he said.
He defended his father’s record, saying, “The entirety of the progressive side of the Democratic Party said Joe Biden has got more of our agenda accomplished in four years than any president in history.”
