Russian emergency services on Thursday confirmed that the wreckage of an Antonov-24 (An-24) passenger aircraft, which had gone missing earlier in the day, has been found near the town of Tynda in the Amur region.
"Fifteen kilometres from Tynda, the wreckage of an An-24 was found on a slope. The plane was destroyed," the Russian emergencies ministry said, as quoted by Interfax news agency.
The aircraft, operated by Angara Airlines, was carrying around 49 people, 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew members, according to regional governor Vasily Orlov.
The plane took off from Khabarovsk at 7:36 a.m. local time (00:36 Moscow time) on Thursday and was operating on the Khabarovsk–Blagoveshchensk–Tynda route. It disappeared from radar and failed to respond to calls just a few kilometres from Tynda airport.
According to Interfax, the plane vanished during a second landing attempt after an unsuccessful initial approach to the airport.
“All necessary forces and means have been deployed to search for the plane,” Orlov wrote on Telegram earlier in the day.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Tynda is located approximately 6,600km east of Moscow.
This is not the first such incident in the region. In September last year, a Robinson R66 helicopter carrying three people went missing during an unregistered flight over the Zeya district in the northeastern Amur region.
