Shortly after a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which US President Donald Trump expressed frustration over the stalled efforts to end Moscow’s war on Ukraine, Russia launched a drone attack on the Ukrainian capital reports Bloomberg.
Russia launched one of its most intense drone assaults to date, targeting Kyiv in an attack that lasted over six hours. Explosions were heard across the capital, with impacts recorded in five districts and damage reported to residential homes, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, on Telegram.
The number of casualties is still being confirmed, he noted, adding that numerous additional Russian drones were detected in the skies. Following the drone barrage, Russia launched a ballistic missile strike, causing loud explosions throughout the capital.
Earlier over the call Trump said that he made no progress with Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending the war in Ukraine during a phone call, as the Kremlin reaffirmed that Russia would not abandon its objectives in the conflict.
Trump’s bleak assessment comes amid stalled US-led peace efforts aimed at ending the more than three-year-old war and following Washington’s recent pause on certain arms deliveries to Kyiv.
“It was a pretty long call, we talked about a lot of things including Iran, and we also talked about, as you know, the war with Ukraine. And I’m not happy about that,” Trump told reporters.
When asked if the conversation had brought the two sides any closer to a peace deal, Trump admitted, “No, I didn’t make any progress with him at all.”
