Russia has officially invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, marking 80 years since the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko confirmed the invitation on Tuesday.
Quoting Russian news agency Tass, Rudenko said, "It's being worked out, it should be this year. He has an invitation." Discussions are ongoing between New Delhi and Moscow, with Russia hopeful that Modi will participate in the high-profile event.
The annual Victory Day parade is a major commemoration showcasing Russia's military strength and historical significance. Alongside Modi, Russia has also invited leaders from several other "friendly nations" to attend this year’s ceremony, which celebrates the German surrender on May 9, 1945, following a Soviet-led offensive earlier that year.
PM Modi last visited Russia in July 2024, his first visit in nearly five years. During the trip, he held extensive talks with President Vladimir Putin and extended an invitation for Putin to visit India, which was accepted, though no dates have been announced.
Modi and Putin maintain frequent contact, including regular phone conversations and meetings on the sidelines of major international summits.
