The museum announced it would close for the day “for exceptional reasons,” with sources reporting that the thieves fled with jewellery, according to AFP.
“No injuries reported. I'm on site with museum staff and police,” Dati added.
A member of her team told AFP that at least one person had entered the museum. Details about the stolen items have not yet been disclosed. The Louvre, home to iconic works such as the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, is one of the most visited cultural institutions in the world.
Three masked men reportedly broke into Paris’ Louvre Museum shortly after opening, using a goods lift to access the Apollo Gallery, where France’s crown jewels are kept. The thieves, allegedly armed with small chainsaws, stole nine pieces of jewellery.
They escaped on a motor scooter, and the value of the stolen items is under evaluation.
