  • Staff struggled to control the robot, raising safety concerns
  • The incident sparked debate about emergency controls for robots

A restaurant robot meant to serve customers ended up creating chaos instead. A video from a Haidilao Hot Pot outlet in California shows the robot suddenly behaving unpredictably on the dining floor. Instead of calmly moving between tables, it starts swinging its arms and moving erratically, knocking things over and breaking plates as diners watch.

Staff quickly step in, but it is not an easy stop. Two or three employees can be seen trying to hold the robot down and regain control, almost like they are dealing with a piece of equipment that has gone completely off script. For a few moments, the situation looks both chaotic and slightly surreal.

There are no reports of anyone being seriously hurt, but the clip has clearly unsettled people. A machine that is supposed to make service smoother ends up becoming the problem in the room.

The clip has been circulating widely, and the reaction has been split. Some people see it as just another odd tech moment, the kind that looks dramatic but is ultimately harmless. Others are not so quick to dismiss it, saying it highlights a real safety concern, especially in a space where people are sitting close together.

Haidilao has been fairly open about using robots in its restaurants, mainly to carry food and support staff during service. These machines usually run on fixed routes and are built to avoid bumping into people or objects. That is why this incident stands out. It shows what happens when the system does not behave the way it is supposed to.

A lot of the concern now is about the response. Instead of a quick shutdown, staff had to step in and physically hold the robot down. That has led to questions about whether there are reliable emergency controls in place and how easy it is to stop these machines when something goes wrong.

This is not the first time a video like this has sparked debate, and it probably will not be the last. As robots start showing up more often in everyday settings, small failures can quickly turn into public moments.

For now, it looks like an isolated incident. But it is also a reminder that bringing machines into busy, human spaces comes with risks that are easy to overlook until something goes wrong.
