Alexander Dugin, a Russian philosopher and political theorist often referred to as ‘Putin’s brain’, has hailed the second term of US President Donald Trump as a second step against globalism and suggested that his victory in the 2024 presidential polls was evidence that “Putinism has won in the United States”.
In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria from Moscow to discuss Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump, Dugin suggested that both nations now share a common ideological stance against globalism, emphasizing sovereignty and traditional values.
“We have a different United States: not the stronghold and head headquarters of globalism but the kind of sovereign national state, global power with traditional values,” Dugin told Zakaria on Sunday as he tried to liken Washington with Moscow.
Dugin noted that President Trump’s America has a lot in common with Russia under Vladimir Putin. Trump has often lauded his Russian counterpart as a “genius.”
“In these new conditions, I think Putin’s Russia and Putin, personally, stops to be the main enemy, the main evil guy, the bad guy,” he added.
Dugin did not comment on the ongoing divide between Trump and Putin, and suggested that it was too early to tell if the two countries can work together to undermine “European globalism”.
Dugin's perspective highlights a perceived alignment between Trump's America and Putin's Russia, particularly in their mutual opposition to globalist agendas. He interprets Trump's electoral success as evidence that the principles underpinning Putin's governance—namely, nationalism, cultural conservatism, and a challenge to liberal globalism—have found resonance within the American political landscape.
This sentiment is echoed by other Russian officials and commentators who view Trump's presidency as a strategic opportunity for Russia. Following the election, several Russian figures expressed optimism about recalibrating US-Russia relations in a manner favorable to Moscow's interests.
