In his first public address since being elected, Pope Leo XIV expressed support for the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, stating that he was praying for God to bestow the world with the “miracle of peace.”
Speaking before a large crowd in St. Peter’s Square during his inaugural Sunday blessing, just three days after his election on May 8. In a heartfelt speech, the new Pope made an appeal to world leaders, urging them to end conflict and declaring: “No more war.”
The pope also turned his attention to ongoing global crises, calling for an “authentic and lasting peace” in Ukraine and urging an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and release of all Israeli hostages.
“I pray to God to grant our world the miracle of peace,” Pope Leo said

Reflecting on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Leo echoed Pope Francis' words, condemning the numerous ongoing conflicts around the world and describing them as a "third world war in pieces."
The message, delivered from the Apostolic Palace with a view of St. Peter's Square, set a defining tone for Pope Leo XIV’s papacy, emphasizing his commitment to peace-building and global unity during a time of escalating international tensions.
