Punjab moves to ban TLP; illegal arms holders face 14-year jail

Pakistan Punjab’s government has taken decisive action against Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), labeling the Islamist group an “extremist outfit” and recommending a federal ban on what is considered the country’s third-largest religious party.

The decision was made during a high-level law and order meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where authorities approved measures to seize all TLP properties, freeze its bank accounts, block its posters, banners, and social media accounts, and place its leaders under the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

According to Geo News and Dawn.com, the move represents the toughest action yet against the radical group, which has repeatedly defied state authority through violent demonstrations and street agitations. Information Minister Azma Bokhari confirmed to Dawn.com that the measures specifically targeted the TLP, though the official statement avoided naming the party directly.

Punjab’s administration has also intensified operations against undocumented Afghans and illegal arms as part of the broader crackdown. The campaign, described by provincial officials as “historic” and “extraordinary,” aims to restore order following a series of violent protests.

The crackdown follows deadly clashes in Muridke, where security forces confronted TLP protesters advancing from Lahore. Law enforcement reportedly used baton charges and tear gas to disperse crowds led by party chief Saad Hussain Rizvi.

Reports indicate that Pakistan Rangers engaged with protesters using advanced weapons, while the TLP allegedly resisted police blockades. According to Punjab Police, at least three protesters and one police officer were killed, and dozens were injured. However, local media and eyewitnesses suggested that the actual death toll could be higher.

In a statement on X, Punjab Police said that when the dispersal operation began, “TLP workers resorted to stone-pelting, spiked batons, and petrol bombs, followed by indiscriminate firing, resulting in loss of life among civilians and law enforcement personnel.”
