Debate collapse sparks India-Pak tensions

The highly anticipated Oxford Union debate on the motion, “The House Believes That India’s Response to Pakistan is a Populist Strategy Sold as Security Policy”, ended amid public recrimination, with Indian speaker J Sai Deepak alleging organisational failures and a deliberate Pakistani strategy to avoid confrontation. Deepak shared a detailed account on X, which directly contradicted a statement from the Pakistan High Commission in London, claiming the Indian side had withdrawn.

According to Deepak, the event was fraught with instability from the outset, citing the involvement of Pakistani nationals in key positions. He specifically named Moosa Harraj, the Oxford Union President, whom he claimed is the son of Pakistan’s Minister of Defence Production, and Raza Nazar, the Treasurer. Deepak also noted that the original high-profile Indian speakers—”former COAS Shri Naravane and Dr Swamy”—had pulled out just two days before the debate due to unavoidable commitments, forcing a scramble for replacements.

Despite the short notice, Deepak, prepared to argue India’s case, secured participation from Manu Khajuria and Pt Satish K Sharma, who were available in the UK. The final collapse occurred hours before the debate scheduled for November 27, when Deepak received a call at 3:13 PM stating that the Pakistani delegation, which included Hina Rabbani Khar and Khawaja Muhammad Asif, had not yet arrived in London. This prompted the Indian team to abandon the journey to Oxford.

The situation turned farcical when Deepak later received confirmation that the Pakistani delegation had, in fact, landed and was staying at a hotel in Oxford. Deepak then accused the Pakistani side of “deserting the battlefield even before the battle begins” and criticised the Oxford Union leadership for allowing the institution to be “dragged in muck” and become a mouthpiece for the Pakistan High Commission.

Shiv Sena (UBT) lawmaker Priyanka Chaturvedi also commented on the incident on X:

"Pakistan is crying again over an Oxford Union debate. This is for the record. Once again they have proved to be liars. Expecting any better from them was not even on my list."

In contrast, the Pakistan High Commission issued a statement expressing regret that the Indian delegation—initially listed as General Naravane, Dr Subramanian Swamy, and Sachin Pilot—had “withdrawn at the last minute”, handing a “walkover” to the Pakistani side. The statement framed the withdrawal as a lack of confidence in defending India’s security policy in a “neutral and intellectually rigorous debate”.
