Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old self-described socialist of Indian origin and the son of filmmaker Mira Nair, made headlines in June by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City's mayoral primary. If he wins the general election in November, Mamdani would become the city's first Muslim mayor.
He is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. Mamdani's campaign focused on issues affecting everyday New Yorkers, including support for policies such as rent freezes, free public bus services, and state-operated grocery stores aimed at tackling the rising cost of living.
At a passionate press conference on Thursday, Mamdani declared that his leadership would be “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare,” responding to speculation that the former president might attempt to involve himself in the city’s mayoral race.
"You don't need to take me at my word or take Andrew Cuomo at his," Mamdani said. "You need only look at the actions of the Trump administration since I won the Democratic primary."
