Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani voiced his support for Starbucks employees across the US participating in an Unfair Labor Practices (ULP) strike, demanding a fair contract.
On X, Mamdani said, “While workers are on strike, I won’t be buying any Starbucks, and I’m asking you to join us. Together, we can send a powerful message: No contract, no coffee.”

More than 1,000 unionized baristas staged walkouts at 65 stores nationwide on Thursday, coinciding with Red Cup Day, a high-traffic promotional event, causing some closures. Shift supervisor Brenna Nendel highlighted the solidarity, saying, "We're asking customers to boycott Starbucks while we're on strike. No one's working. We're all out here."
Meanwhile, Verizon announced plans to cut around 15,000 jobs over the next week, marking the largest reduction in its history. CEO Dan Schulman stated, "We are going to take bold and fiscally responsible action to redefine Verizon's trajectory at this critical inflection point for our company. These will not be incremental changes."
Most reductions will be layoffs, with some roles possibly converted to franchise positions, following the company’s Q3 report showing net income of $5.1 billion despite a drop of 7,000 postpaid wireless customers compared to a gain of 18,000 in Q3 2024.
