Newly appointed Swedish Health Minister Elisabet Lann collapses during press conference

September 10, 2025 / 17:34 IST

Just hours after being appointed Sweden’s new Health Minister, Elisabet Lann collapsed on stage during a press conference on Tuesday. The 48-year-old was standing alongside Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Christian Democrats leader Ebba Busch, responding to media questions when the incident occurred.

Footage shared online shows Lann suddenly leaning forward and falling over a transparent lectern, hitting the floor. Ebba Busch quickly came to her aid, rolling her over as others gathered to assist. Lann appeared unconscious for a brief moment before security personnel helped her.

Shortly afterward, Lann returned to the briefing and attributed the incident to a sudden drop in blood sugar.

"This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop," she said, according to broadcaster SVT.

She exited the room again soon after but appeared to recover without serious injury. It remains unclear whether she received formal medical treatment. The press conference was cut short, and the Q&A session was canceled.

Lann had been appointed Health Minister earlier that day, replacing Acko Ankarberg Johansson, who resigned on Monday after three years in the role.

A long-time member of the Christian Democrats, Lann previously served as a municipal councillor in Gothenburg and held various government positions, including deputy director at the Cabinet Office. She holds a master’s degree in peace and development studies and political science.
